“I summon the youth of the world!”

The Boys in the Boat

“I summon the youth of the world!” is the English rendering of the inscription planned for the great bell above the Maifeld in Berlin. Set between two swastikas, the words turn an immense Olympic construction project into a public declaration about youth—and, in the narrative’s sharpest reversal, foreshadow the young people the regime would later send to fight and die beneath the tower.

Inscription and Setting

The Maifeld, west of the Olympic Stadium, had been leveled into a vast, flat assembly area while a limestone bell tower was rising there. Planned to stand just over 248 feet tall, the tower would carry the inscription around the bottom edge of its great bell: “Ich rufe die Jugend der Welt!” and, in English, “I summon the youth of the world!” Two swastikas would frame the words. The scale of the site and the commanding placement of the inscription give the phrase the character of a public summons, not a private sentiment.

Olympic Promise

The call anticipates the arrival of young people for the Olympics. The narrative immediately extends that expectation: the youth would come first for the Games, “and then for something else.” That turn makes the inscription more than a celebratory emblem. Its promise of a worldwide gathering acquires a second, foreboding meaning as the account looks beyond the Olympic spectacle to the future of the boys addressed by the call.

The Summons Reversed

A little less than ten years later, in the last desperate days of the Third Reich, Hitler Youth boys—some only ten or eleven—would crouch among blocks of Franconian limestone beneath the bell tower. They would shoot at advancing Russian boys, many not much older than themselves, while Berlin burned around them. The narrative adds a further consequence: boys who cried, refused to shoot, or tried to surrender would be lined up against the limestone slabs by their officers and shot. Against this ending, the bell’s invitation becomes bitterly ironic: the tower that announced a summons to the world’s youth stands over children drawn into war and exposed to death from both the advancing enemy and their own side.
